Executive Counselling for Men

Man experiencing executive stress and burnout

Being in a senior position can bring responsibility, pressure and expectations that are difficult to switch off from.  You may be used to being the person others rely on. The person who makes decisions, solves problems and keeps things moving. But who do you turn to when you are struggling?

Perhaps work has started to occupy your thoughts long after you have left the office. Maybe you are finding it harder to switch off, your sleep is suffering or you are becoming increasingly anxious, irritable or exhausted.

From the outside, everything may appear to be going well. Inside, things may feel very different.

SubRosa Counselling offers confidential executive counselling for men. Sessions are with Edward Hopgood, a Registered Member of BACP, and provide a confidential, supportive space where you can talk openly without judgement.

What is executive counselling?

Executive counselling is an opportunity to step away from the demands of your professional role and focus on yourself.

It is not executive coaching, and it is not about improving your performance, leadership skills or productivity at work.

It is counselling.

The difference is largely in what you are bringing to the sessions and what you want to explore. Executive coaching is often focused on the future. It may help you develop leadership skills, achieve professional goals, improve performance, navigate a particular business challenge or make decisions about your career.

Counselling is different.

Counselling provides a space to explore how you are feeling, what you are experiencing and what may be happening beneath the surface. It can involve looking at patterns in your thoughts, emotions, relationships and behaviour, as well as experiences that may be affecting how you are coping now.

You may be an executive, director, business owner, senior manager or professional. You may have built a successful career and still find yourself struggling with stress, anxiety, burnout, low mood, relationships or the difficulty of switching off from work. Perhaps you know that something isn't right, but you're not entirely sure what it is.

You don't need to arrive with a specific goal or a plan for what needs to change. Counselling gives you the opportunity to slow things down and talk openly about what is happening, without the expectation that you need to find an immediate solution.

For someone who spends much of their working life making decisions, solving problems and thinking about the future, having a space where you don't have to do any of those things can be valuable. The focus is not on making you a better executive, the focus is on you.

When the pressure starts to follow you home

Being successful at work does not make you immune to stress, anxiety or emotional difficulties.

In fact, the responsibility that comes with senior positions can sometimes make it harder to recognise when things are becoming too much.

Executive counselling for men online and in Swindon

You might be dealing with:

  • Constant pressure to perform or deliver
  • Difficulty switching off from work
  • Overthinking decisions or conversations
  • Feeling responsible for everyone around you
  • Anxiety about making the wrong decision
  • Irritability or a shorter temper than usual
  • Poor sleep or waking during the night
  • Feeling mentally exhausted despite continuing to perform
  • Difficulty being present with your partner or family
  • Feeling that you cannot show uncertainty or vulnerability
  • Burnout or a sense that you are running on empty
  • A loss of enjoyment outside of work
  • Major changes, uncertainty or increased responsibility
  • The feeling that you should be able to cope on your own

Sometimes there is a clear reason for how you are feeling.

Sometimes there isn't. You may simply know that something has changed and that the way you have been coping no longer seems to be working.

How counselling can help executives

Counselling is not about being told how you should run your business, manage your team or deal with a particular situation at work. It is not about giving you a list of strategies to become more productive or telling you what decisions you should make. It is a space where you can talk honestly about what is happening in your life and explore your thoughts, feelings and reactions without judgement.

Together, we can look at the pressures you are experiencing, the patterns that may have developed in the way you respond to them and how your professional life may be affecting you outside of work. This might include exploring stress, anxiety, burnout, perfectionism, pressure, responsibility, confidence, decision-making, control, boundaries, work-life balance, relationships or difficulty switching off.

Counselling can also help you understand your own part in the difficulties you are experiencing without simply placing all of the responsibility on yourself. Understanding why you respond in certain ways, what drives those responses and what you may be trying to protect or achieve can make it easier to consider different choices in the future.

You may be used to looking for solutions and making decisions quickly. Counselling offers something different. It gives you time to slow down, reflect and make sense of what is happening rather than immediately trying to fix it. The aim is not to give you quick answers or tell you what to do. It is to help you gain a clearer understanding of what is happening, what you need and what you want to do next.
